12.48 is a hair low. Each cell should read 2.2v so you should have 13.2 but 12.48 would still start most older vehicles. I agree with terry that checking your alternator is a better choice with the light coming on.

It will ground through something else if the negative is disconnected. You have a few other grounds.

87 used the older renix fuel injection. Are the injectors low or high impedence for that type and year? If it uses low and you replaced with high, your ecu capacotors will burn out after a while as the new injectors have to much resistance. I kind of remember bmw guys having the same issue...
