This is a super useful resource. Thanks, Utah.

    Engine upgrade

OK, I enjoy my 4-banger, but I think at some time in the future I'm going to find an 8-cylinder motor to upgrade to. I don't like slowing down to 50 on the uphill grades out of my town, and I'm getting the "I want more power" bug. Plus, as this project advances, I want to put 35's or 36's on...

    Nutter Bypass, A good Read!!!

I did the Nutter on my '85 CJ7 4-banger, and just could not get it to operate as advertised. I followed the instructions to the letter, but it seems to have run better pre-Nutter. I reversed the Nutter, basically putting it back to stock, and then disconnected the plug for the mixture control...

What was the last thing you read?

Reinventing The Wheel by Chris Zane of Zane's bicycles. Strongly recommend it for anybody in business.

You know you drive a Jeep when....

Complete strangers wave at you as you pass - because they're driving a Jeep, too.

    power steering

My '85 CJ7 was in the same boat. I went to a junkyard and found an '87 Cherokee with power steering. I took the pump and bracket, hoses and the gearbox with the Pittman Arm attached. The gearbox on the donor vehicle was bolted directly to the frame with no bracket. When I removed my manual...

    CJ7 304 idle problem

When I rebuilt the carb on my CJ7 (4-banger), I ended up having to replace it altogether. I found the bushing for the throttle shaft where it goes into the body of the carb was slightly oval from wear, and every time I stepped on the gas even a little, it would allow air in, throwing everything...

    Temperature sending unit

I had grounding issues, too. I solved it by running a wire from the firewall to one of the screws that attaches the speedo. This ensures that I have ground even if the connection between the dash and the rest of the body is bad. Of course, you have to make sure you have ground from your body...

    Power brake conversion

This one had the 4 in it, but I'll go check for another one or see if they've had any CJ's show up since my last visit.

    Nutter Bypass in 2.5L

Just joined. I bought an 85 CJ7 with the same motor, and I think I can figure out the wiring and the timing, but I have a question about the carb part. Did you adjust the low speed mixture screw out or in, or did you do anything with it at all? At what point did you disconnect your mixture...

    Nutter Bypass in 2.5L

Oh, sorry. I thought I was replying to the guy who had already done it. I'll redirect my post to him. I'm planning on getting to mine this weekend.

    Power brake conversion

My '85 CJ has no power brakes, and that doesn't sit well with me. I went to the local recycler and found an '84 Cherokee (is that a TJ, YJ or what?), pirated the power brake vacuum reservoir and attached master cylinder, and headed home, ready for my next upgrade. However, from looking at my...

My wife could become a jeep widow.

Just picked up my '85 CJ7 4-banger in December. $2500 got me the Jeep with 5 new 31's, a winch that work spottily, a 4-inch Pro-Comp lift and pretty much nothing else. Didn't run remarkably well, but I intended it to be a project. Since then I've put in a rebuilt carb, O2 sensor, plugs, K&N...

    Temperature sending unit

It should be on the head. Driver's side, near the firewall. Typically when you have a problem with the CJ gauges, it's due to bad grounding. Make sure you have good ground at the dash all the way to the block.

Santee, 10 miles east of San Diego. Bought my '85 CJ7 last December, and never intend to get rid of it. It's a project I'll never stop developing.
