4.0 grinding

RE: Re: RE: What Kind of tires?

I was thinking about purchasing a 93 xj from one of my friends on the cheap.
It has the 4.0 ho but is making a grinding noise whenever its running coming from the engine and there are little metal flakes in the oil. I dont know engines very well but i know this is not a good thing.

I was wondering what i should do to remedy this problem. Is it possible to just rebuild the motor or am i going to have to buy a whole new one. It has a solid transfercase and transmission and also a dana 44 so im going to want to fix it up and not part it out.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd have to agree there

Finding a junkyard engine might be the cheapest/easiest route

You need to take it to a small "old school" type garage and have them check it out. It could be several things--main bearings, cam bearings, some part of the valvetrain, it may have wiped a lope out on the camshaft.....whatever it is, it has already done some other damage but the engine may not be dead. You may be able to make a simple repair and get a few more miles out of it. Stop driving it and get it checked out.

RE: New Soft Top

The 44 must be swapped in, huh?

Go for it if it's cheap enough and you have the means to swap out an engine. It'll have to come out either way, rebuild or replace.
