4x4isnt working

Ok...I have a 90 jeep Cherokee inline 6 manual transmission and when I put my four wheel in the light comes on but after tryin her out on the snow my four wheel drive is not working ... I have know idea where to start???
 

Were either of the front tires spinning when you had it in 4x4?

Sounds like you have a vacuum problem. The 91 and earlier have a vacuum disconnect front axle. When you put it in 4wd hi or lo it uses a fork to engage the passenger side two piece axle. The lines dry rot and break and then it doesn't work. You can fix it pretty easily, just google jeep central axle disconnect (cad). You can also spin the fork around so that it is always engauged like later models.
 

Remove the disconnect from the front axle (4 bolts) and move the shift collar manually so it locks both axleshafts together. Reinstall the disconnect upside down, it will hold the shift collar in place. Now you will have 4wd.
