'84 258 in '94 YJ

I found an '84 amc 258 for a very reasonable price, Has anyone put one of these in a YJ? I have a 2.5 in it now and need more power. It also has an AX-5 transmission. Will that transmission hold up to the 258 and will it bolt up together? I don't want to have to change much out right now.

The AX5 will not bolt to the 258.

The 258 is still a marginal motor to go through all the trouble putting in. If you're going through the trouble, put an engine in that can make some power. Find a donor with a transmission and transfer case and you can save a bundle on adapters.

The '94 2.5L puts out more HP (but less torque) than the 258.

plus, not sure about your state, but you can not register a vehicle with an older motor in it in my state. has to be from the same year or newer.

and I agree, the 258 is not worth the trouble or agrivation.

Look for a LS1.. I think you will be happier.
