The Jeep starts goes to approx. 2,000 rpm and then you can watch the idle drop to 0 before choking out. I have replaced the idle sensor, throttle position sensor, and the fuel filter. I have cleaned ground connections near the oil dip stick. Almost sounds like its starving for gas.

I put gas in the jeep drove 41 miles and just out of no-where it started running rough, back fires from TBI and exhaust, and if you put it into drive or reverse I can't even get out of my drive way. :???:

I have had one person say my points...?? and somebody else say my timing gear and belt?

None of the above. First, swap the relays by your coil because the fuel pump relay is either going bad or your filter is clogging or the fuel pump resistor (driver's side fender) is cracked or the fuel pump is going out. Could possibly be the crank position sensor (top of the trans under the brake booster)
You say there was a backfire? Pull the hose from the brake booster before starting and see if it holds vacuum. Pedal would be hard too if the booster is shot. Listen for vacuum leaks and make sure the vacuum hose from the intake to the valve cover isn't clogged. Bad gas? Diesel instead of gas? A few ideas to check

Also check the map sensor ,the one on the fire wall above the valve cover ,see if it has a good connection, and a good vacuum hose .

Ok...as of today....checked to make sure the injectors are receiving the signal all that is good. I did do a PSI check on the fuel rail..and trying to start the jeep shows 10psi -- idle should be 14-15psi. Je4reyk...I will check all that while I am out there. Thanks for the input.

I was informed that the Jeeps only like non-ethanol -- it has regular gas in it. I swapped the realys around and I do hear the fuel pump -- the jeep turns over but does not start....fuel pump resister looks good the putty stuff on the back of it is cracking and falling out..but it is all one piece. I cleaned the contacts on the resistor, and on the relays.

None of the auto stores here check relays....so I tried one at a time in the fuel relay spot. I could hear the pump with each one of the relays. Fuel filter has been replaced...

I could use a disgram of the vacuum lines. Looks like a few are missing - cruise control lines, and some others. I just got this jeep approx. 5 months ago. This is my first jeep - just trying to get everything working on it.

THings replaced as of yesterday:
TPS
Idle control
fuel filter
spark plugs
plug wires
distributor cap
rotor button
verified injection wire signal
coil is working
10psi on the fuel rail trying to start it. normal idle should be 14-15psi

Your fuel pressure seems realty low ,I think it should be like 25 or 30

I can not find a return fuel line for a 1989 jeep cherokee. I have replaced the pump/sendin unit the jeep now starts but still chokes out. It gets too 2000 rmp runs for a few seconds then drops rmps until it chokes out. I need to find a return line - the one i have looks like it goes from a steel line to rubber line to a steel quick disconnect fitting that plugs into the fuel rail. I have called the local jeep dealer, parts stores, and now I am searching online. i really dont want to buy this part at a junk yard. If any body knows where i can get the return line please let me know....

Thanks everybody....it was my fuel pump. I replaced it without dropping the tank and the jeep is running great. I do have any issue....Not sure if I needed to open another ticket. :))

I am missing (2) vacuum lines. They are running from the EGR Solenoid on the front driverside fender. Also found a line near the brake booster that is plugged. I am not sure what this line goes to. It is not the brake booster. Any ideas would be great. I plan on crawling underneath and tracing the line. I would really like to get the (2) vacuum lines ran correctly.

THANKS AGAIN.
