97 Grand Laredo 4.0 4th gear shifting problem

I have a 97 grand cherokee that will not shift to overdrive or 4th gear. Has the 4.0 and select trac 4x4. My TPS sensor was malfunctiong so I replaced it and it got worse and wouldnt shift at all into 4th. So i have had people tell me that it is the computer in the engine bay by the firewall. Anybody have any thoughts on this issue? The only thing else that I think it could be would be something electrical like a selnoid in the trans. Let me know please. i would appreciate the help. It sounds like you must be in limp mode, where the Jeep locks itself into a low gear because it's sensed a problem.

Yes the light is on. How do you get it out of limp mode?

You need to erase the DTC to get it out of limp in mode. If the problem still persist, the dtc will come back. My advice is to get it scanned and see what the dtc is and go from there.

I know that you can scan the computer but does if have to be done at a dealer? I have had it scanned before with a simple code reader and tried to erase the codes and it would come back. How should I proceed? Let me know, thanks.

If the same DTC keeps coming back, that indicates the initial direction of diagnostics.The dtc's that a code reader have is the same as the factory scantool, they are similar but not the same. . The factory scantool can perform test , monitor multiple sensors etc.. What is the dtc that keeps coming back?
