choke..too much or too little

On these cold winter mornings the old jeep takes a few cranks to turn over and then idles fine. When I take off down the road he sputters until he is nice and warm about three miles.
Is my choke too rich or too lean?
Timing is dead on, idle speed is steady at about 750, cold idle sped on the second step is 1500 and the carb fells well adjusted.
Quick offer your wisdom my day light is fading.

Try just advancing your timing first. You might have to lean it out as well.

So far so good.
I didn't mess with the timing as it is dead on with the under-hood sticker.
I did turn the choke back so that it is now set four notches rich and he started right up and sputtered very little at the beginning of my test drive.
I think I will let him stay as is for a few mornings and see how it goes.

you can always let it warm up before you go.. better for the engine anyway.

Old engines need time to warm up. My CJ runs like junk until the intake manifold warms up.

Well, I adjusted the choke and the Cj turns right over and now warms up faster. About 5 minutes of idleing and away we go.
In defense of the carter carb, with it rebuilt and now tuned it provides a smoth dirve and suprising kick in a motor with 151K miles behind it. I think it will do just fine until its engine rebuild time.
