CJ Transformation

RE: 35

Here I go again...
I was under the Jeep fixing a minor transmision leak a month ago and noticed that there was a crack in my frame right by the transfer case. For those of you that don't know, I was running a 78 CJ7 with an injected AMC 360, TH400 auto, Atlas II 3.8, Chevy 1 tons and 39.5 boggers on beadlocks.
I already had plans to stretch the wheelbase and install some Sway A Way Airshox on the rear with a 4-link. I called my buddy that helps me with all the fab work and discussed options for fixing the frame. I hauled the Jeep over to his shop and we got to looking at the frame and found 3 other cracks. The decision was made to strip the Jeep and put a YJ frame under it (wider, stronger and thicker gauge than a CJ). Here's where it snowballs...
Before all the real work started, the same buddy came across a deal on a Chevy 5.3 Litre out of a newer truck. It was priced right so I bought it. The Chevy will be cranking out 315 hp when the programmer is done with the computer and harness.
My AMC model Th400 would not fit a chevy engine, so I called another friend who donated me a Chevy 400 housing. Right now I'm having a transmission shop swap the guts from the AMC to the Chevy 400 and make it bombproof.
I picked up a YJ frame for $350 from a Jeep salvage yard and got it torched clean of all the unnecessary BS and painted last weekend. We pulled the old frame out and got the new one in on saturday. BTW..it is not a direct bolt in, but close. That's a whole other thread.
It was a lot of work removing the front clip, pulling the engine, transmission and transfer case, removing the suspension , axles and frame and cutting all my stuff off and welding to the new frame. We got the new frame under the Jeep, the front axle and suspension back in, the 5.3 mounted and the transmission and transfer case are under there also. Had to add a 1.5" Custom body lift to fit everything in there nice and cozy.
Now, my buddy is fabbing the 4 link while I run down parts and get the harness, ECM and transmission done.
I got my old 39.5" Boggers sold and have purchased a new set of 42" IROKS. I bought them brand new for $900 minus the $300 from the boggers = a $600 set of Iroks. Killer!
There is still a lot of work to do, but it is lookin good so far. I will be running new brake lines, electrical and driveshafts also, which are another pain in the rear, but worth it.
I hope to get some pics of the progress this weekend. I will try to post them next week if possible.
See how a transmission leak can lead to a complete frame up rebuild in this whacky sport we love.

 sweeeeet.

You interested in adopting a 30 year old son?

I will have to pass on the adoption. I already have to many expensive hobbies and we are also expecting a child around the end of March. Sorry to disappoint.
Yes it will cost slightly less than $60K. I will sell it for $59K though. I'll even throw in a full tank of premium gas and leave a few beers in the cooler.
After all the rebuild is finished, I will only have one other thing that I will need to do...install a back seat for my kid to ride in. I have a few years to get that straightened out though.

Sounds awesome! What a deal on the Iroks! Looking forward to the pics...

Hope Momma is doing well, this is your first, right?

RE: Dana 60 axle code identification

Yeah it's our first. Momma is quite moody these days and she goes from nausea to wanting Chicken McNuggets in .04 seconds.
I step lightly around the house to say the least. I will be ready to sling a backseat in that Jeep and take our kid out for a fun weekend. We are looking forward to good times.

What kind of anti freeze?

The build sheet is getting longer by the day with this thing. I just got in my new Yukon Chromoly 35 spline Dana 60 shafts and a fresh set of Tera Low Hubs. I have a set of high steer arms on order to move my hydro set up on top of the axle. Now I have to surf Summit for some blingin Lokar dipsticks and shifter and throttle cables. Better hit K&N while I'm at it for a fresh conical air filter.
My buddy is trying to talk me into a 150HP NOS nitrous kit like he just put on his buggy. Although interesting, I don't think I'm ready for that step just yet. 465 HP might be a little dangerous.

RE: CV driveshafts

oh my god, and i thot i was doing good... i have to play catch up now!

RE: Steam from front end

Sounds like it'll be a pretty sweet rig!!

Can't wait to see some pics and how it turns out!

We've got the 5.3L in our new Cheby with DOD pretty sweet so far. Factory rated at 300hp.
Yep we've got one in my wife's 03 Avalanche. Her's is rated at 285 like most others. The Denali's and Excalades got a little more boost up to around 300 or so.
My programmer says he can get it up to 315 without any problems. I hope it runs well. I may sign up for one of those Ulitmate Adventures or some other kind of road trip.

RE: Will this work?

Rooster, I don't know any specifics on the 5.3, but I'd check into a few things before I hit it with a 150 shot with the load you're going to be putting on it. The factory cast pistons in the older 350s weren't really suited for anything bigger than a 100 shot, and the powdered metal connecting rods weren't ideal for heavy nitrous either.

400-415hp with a 100 shot would be fun in your Jeep.[/i]

Maybe one of these days. I didn't have any problem breaking the frame with my old 360 and it was cranking less Hp than the stock 5.3.
For some reason I have it stuck in my head that the first thing I want to do is jump my Jeep. I don't know why, never really wanted to before. I guess we will see how well the Sway Away Airshox work. I'll have to find a hayfield with some good terraces and cut loose on it. The idea sounds completely ignorant.

MC2100 questions

Maybe I can get someone to video the flight. I would hate for you to come all this way and see me do a crash and burn Evil Knievel move.
