CJ7 stalls going up hill

i have a 79 CJ7 with v8 5.0L that stalls going up hill. it seems to run out of gas. if i let it sit for 5 minutes, it starts and it seems to run fine. the gas tank and lines are fine. the problem is somewhere starting with the fuel pump onwards.

has anyone experienced this and know what i should look for to correct ?

My first guess is fuel filter. If the filter is good/new check fuel pressure.

If it has a carburator I would suspect the floats are causing the problem if the fuel system has good pressure and flow. What knd of carb does it have?

X2 on the carburator. I use to have a stalling issue on steep inclines even with an electronic fuel pump. I installed an offroad kit from Edelbrock that is specific for my Edlebrock carburator. It keeps the needle open on steep angles thus keeping the float bowl full of fuel to keep it from stalling.

I'm not exactly sure of the carb - i'm sure it's the original.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. This gives me plenty to start with.

the issue here is not one of running out of fuel, but to much fuel. when you are just slowly cruzin down the trail, the bowel gets completely full of fuel because the engine is hardly using any fuel. when you start going up a steep hill, the fuel will slosh out of the vents at the top of the bowel and dump raw fuel directly in to the carb, flooding you out.

the kit steelheadz is referring to does not keep the float open, but rather closed, so any hard bumps wont allow the float to bounce off its seat and allow a large in-rush of fuel into the bowel, which would over fill it and, again, spill out the vents and flood the engine. the kit should have also come with vent extensions to make it harder for gas to spill into the carb.

one trick you can use to help out is before you start a climb is at the bottom of the hill rev your engine. this will use up the gas in the bowell and as long as your using the lowest gear possable, to keep the rpm's up, you should have no issues. getting an off road kit for the carb is also a good idea.
