cj7 vs cj5

Just bought my second jeep -- a 1980 CJ7 with a 258 and automatic transmission. I am not particularly happy with the auto transmission, but the frame and body have no rust.

I believe the auto transmission is somewhat rare for a 1980 -- does anyone know? What would this jeep be worth? I also own a 1979 CJ5, and I don't understand why the CJ5 would not be more valuable than a CJ7, for there seem to be fewer of them on the road. Does anyone have any comments.[addsig]

I would rather have a stright shift than an auto! The CJ5 is a great little ride if you are not tall or fat I am both so it would have little worth for me. The CJ7 would be my choice of the two. No a different note welcome to the board! What part of the world are you jeepen in. Tug[addsig]

I am from Daytona Beach, Fl. I have had my CJ5 for over three years. It is what I would call a "man's" jeep -- not for the lady to use for grocery shopping. When I bought the jeep, the body was in real tough shape. I merely knocked all the rust out, sanded the holes, filled or covered the holes and painted it with Walmart anodized bronze spray paint -- about 97 cents a can. Without doubt, it has turned out to be the best vehicle I have ever had -- I have had to do nothing else to the jeep!!! I get comments where ever I go. If I park next to a bunch of newer jeeps -- my jeep is the one evryone is looking at. In short, in my opinion, the cj's are the REAL thing -- when peple pull up next to me, they know that my cj5 is a REAL jeep. I just bought the 1980 cj7 with auto transmission -- I think it will be easier to find accessories than the cj5. I also do not like the auto -- but the frame and body are near perfect -- and the price was right -- $1500.[addsig]

Your jeep is equipped with a TF999 3 speed auto unless its been swapped out with something stronger from the earlier jeeps which used the TH350. Its a medium duty transmission but was offered with a V8 in front so it has to be fairly sturdy. Its generally the same auto transmission used in the newer 6cyl jeeps (more sensors and electronic shift controls). As far as rarity I do not really know on that matter...but autos have been offered in jeeps since the 70's...as a factory option of course.[addsig]

Your CJ-7 would probably be considered rarer if it was a 76-79... because I think that all the autos from those years had quadratrac. However, that does not mean that a quadratrac-equipped CJ-7 would be more desireable. Those drivetrains are not considered as durable, and I think that the t-case requires more maintence.

Is the auto rare? Perhaps a little less likely to be seen, but I'm not sure how that affects the value of the vehicle. Take a look around ebay every once and awhile, and watch some auctions to see what people are asking for (and what they are getting) for jeeps in similar condition to yours.

Good Luck,

Cj7s are actuallly the more rare of the 2. There were more CJ5s made then any other CJ ever. I guess a CJ6 would be the most rare since it mainly was only made for the military for a couple years (I think)[addsig]
