I was browsing the latest edition of my Quadratec and i came upon something that seemed rather peculier. Clear differental covers. I dont know about anyone else, but i think thay look pretty sick and was wondering if anyone out there had them or knows someone who has them. I want to know how well they will hold up under trail abuse. Although the ad says that thay are stonger than metal ones, i have trouble beliving that. Please Help!!![addsig]

Hey bud, I heard about the also. They sound tight. I havent done much looking into them, but I still have my doubts about them. I dont know how you could see through them still after the gear oil is in there for a little and maybe gets a little dark. Let me know if you find anything else out about them. Thanks! I have also put thought into them.... I actually believe that they would be stronger than the metal diff covers.... I am assuming that the clear ones would be some sort of plexi glass or polymer of some sort. Most diff covers are aluminum, which could EASILY be damaged by trail. A poly cover would have some give to it before it breaks. It is also a good way to monitor your gear oil and the quality of the mechanical parts inside. If I had the money, I would buy me a set along with some guards for them.[addsig]

I'm new but I've done some research on the clear diff. covers.
They are made of a very strong plastic that is practicly bullet proof. The reason they are clear is so that if you do a lot of mud and water 4 wheeling it is easy to see if any water has reached the diffs since the water would settle to the bottom after sitting for a while. Hope this helps.[addsig]

Would be nice to check the fluid levels but other than that I can not see the advantages. Aluminum will bend and shift shape when plowed into by a big rock or something. Poly would be more likly to break and cause a leak. At least that would make sence to me. However I am very interested to see what the rest of you have to say on the subject. before now I had never heard of such a thing. Tug[addsig]

I'm all about it, i wish i had the money... It would make for an easier time checking things out. I've been inside my diffs too many times just to realize that I wasted money on new fluid to replace it with.[addsig]

Hey Snitty! Have you checked into the prices on them at all? How much do they run? Who sells them?[addsig]

dana 30 & 35's cost $130
dana 44 costs 140
amc 20 costs 150

they look pretty cool, but not worth my money.

I like the idea of these alot, especially being able to easily check the transmission fluids, but i would be most concerned about how brittle the plastics get when they are cold.[addsig]

How do you check the transmission fluids from the diff?
Never seen aluminum diff covers, most are made of steel.
The clear plastic ones I've seen had no fill hole, would be interesting to know how to fill them and then get the cover sealed  [addsig]

I've seen first hand what granite can do to differential covers! How bad rocks can tear up, rip holes into them! Steel covers can be "pounded" out and welded shut if needed. These clear covers, you smack them hard enough, you migh not be able to seal them up. Go through some deep mud, there not clear anymore now are they!
Why bother.
For show queens, I think they'd be great!

i think that the diff. covers may be a little stronger than everyone says. and the reason that you don't see a hole in them is because it only shows the AMC 20 where the fill plug is on the other side of the diff. technology has come along way and if you wheel like i do (mud only) these things are great i have a buddy that has then on and he can't be happier[addsig]

They look cool in the close up and stuff but i dont know if they look cool actully on on the trail or if they look like you should be on team all out of the closet. if you have any pics please sent them to mxpx182lit@aol.com. Thanks[addsig]

4wheel offroad did a test on clear gearz covers and sadi they were bulletproof.... really[addsig]

...wish I had them when I blew out the spider gears...it would have been cool to see all the metal floating around inside. Would have looked like a small disco ball    [addsig]

I have seen these in essentials, summit, and performance products, they look cool, but how often do you think you are going to have to change gear fluid to keep them looking cool. If you have ever changed gear fluid, you know it gets sh*tty quick![addsig]

I still like the idea... I like to monitor everything... I wish everything could be clear and strong... I wouldn't worry about things[addsig]
