clutch help

I have a 1989 Cherokee Laredo, which recently had a bad leak in the slave cylinder. The leak came on very quickly. I had the clutch replaced, new slave cylinder added (it was internal). But, now the clutch still does not feel just right. No leaking anywhere, mechanic says master is bad. Is it possible master has been bad for awhile, and I just did not notice? He claimed that they bled the system until only fluid came out. If the jeep has sat outside over night the pedal goes easily to the floor. I can still shift, but can feel each gear. If I vigorously pump the pedal there seems to be some pressure. The pedal does not seem to sink like you expect with air in the system, rather, it just goes to the floor. Could it be the new slave cylinder/clutch combination puts a higher pressure on the master, which in turn allows some fluid to blow by the internal seals?

I'll try bleeding the clutch myself tomorrow. Any suggestions as to the best way to bleed it?

Thanks

Sean

Have you checked your hydraulic lines and connections for leaks?

Yes, no leaks after the slave cylinder was replaced. Part of the problem is that I dont know what a working clutch pedal should feel like when depressed. Is it normal to go right to the floor? After pumping it seems to have a little resistance partway to the floor. However, the gears are enganged/disengaged when the pedal is no more than a 1/2 inch from the floor board. Is that normal?

Thanks

Sean

Try to bleed the system again, sometimes man. bleeding wont get all the air and you will need to vacume bleed it the same way you would bleed brakes by yourself. If the Master cyl. is bad it will be leaking down the firewall behind the fuse panel and onto the carpet.
Good-luck and keep JEEPIN!!!

yeah, mating an old, tired master cylinder up to a new slave cylinder isn't a good idea... should replace both at the same time. at least you're not pulling the transmission again!
