Cool Engine Temp

I have an 83 CJ7 with a V8 in it. It usually runs around 200 deg, but today the temp gauge didn't go over 160. It has plenty of coolant, the weather was warm, etc... Does anyone have any suggestions? Is my thermostat dying? Is it the gauge? How do I find out which is crappy? Thanks for your help.

Better to cool than to hot at least. Take a hand held thermometer and check you water temp at your radiator cap. I would put money on your sending unit or the thermostat! Good luck tug[addsig]

Not knowing your motor the sending unit is ??????? the Thermostat will be under the hose fitting bolted to the engin where the top hose from the radiator goes into the engin. You will need to disconect the hose and then unbolt the fitting lift it offf and ther will be the thermostat. You will need a gasket and some Indain Head Shaclack or other gasket sealant to replace the fitting. I would ask the counter person at a quality parts house like NAPA for location of the sending unit. Tug[addsig]
