Cooling issue.

I have a 2005 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 v6. The water pump went out on me for the first time at 180k miles. So I replace the pump, both radiator hoses and the thermostat. There is no leak what so ever anywhere but the car is overheating completely. The pump is turning. The lower radiator hose (connects to the thermostat housing and radiator) has fluid in it but the upper does not. Also, the transmission overheat message came on on the dash??? What does that have to do with the cooling system?? All fluids (oil, trans fluid, antifreeze) are all normal.. Whats going on?? These are BRAND NEW parts and I put them on all correctly. Why is it still overheating???

Hate to see you have not gotten any replies to your question yet, so I will throw my hat in the ring................Are there "burp" valves on the motor? There could be more than one and they will be high up on the motor. they are little brass valves that you crack open to let air out as you fill the radiator with the engine off. Don't know if your jeep has them or not, but if it does and you did not fill the system correctly, the air bubbles will stop the flow of coolant. Just a thought, you will have to research it for your specific model and see what the correct steps are to fill the radiator because I don't know for sure, I am new here, just trying to give some ideas.

I'm no an expert by any means, especially with the newer motors, but for whatever reason your coolant is not circulating properly. The fact at your trans is over-heating is a dead give away. The auto-trans cooling lines run through the radiator....Hence the error code/message.

I like Tom's ideas regarding an air lock somewhere. I would start with a cold engine and open the radiator cap. Let the engine idle and watch the coolant with the cap off, is it moving? Just another thought, but did you put the serpentine belt on correctly (i.e. is the pump turning the right way?). Again don't know a lot about the 3.7 V6.

There's a bleeder screw located on the upper radiator hose towards the engine. Make sure you open this bleeder (Allen screw) when your filling up your cooling system. Check and double check that all the air has burped out. You don't have to completely pull the screw out, just enough when you see bubbles coming out is good so that it doesn't spew hot coolant at you. Be careful.
