a buddy of mine is really into International scouts. He and I were talking about one that he found that has a set of Dana 44s under it. he is only interested in the vin plate and frame. I want the axles. My question is how hard is it to swap those into my 78 CJ5? it's a narrow trac system now.
Oh and PS I'm pretty sure even if I don't use them they are a steal at $75.00 for both axles...lol

Grab em never find deals like that , if you don't get to use them you could quadruple your money if you resell them easy , if Im not mistaken but dont quote me on this isn't the scout a driver side drop , cj is passenger side drop , it would involve alot to get them to work as a pair including changing transfer case, but you could use the rear with a few small mods replacing perches shock mounts ect

If they are both D44's then they are from a special order front axle 3200# 1973 model or 1974+ ScoutII. AFAIK all Scouts are right side drop. Scout axles were a very common swap. Now days they are still good axles, but require a bit more work than other axles. You will need to outboard your springs, or weld a new perch on the left and grind the housing on the right so the Jeep spring locations will work. Then cut and rotate the knuckles to get the pinion angle and caster correct. Scout had the pinion and spring perch in the same plane (or really close to the same plane). So to get positive caster angle you will end up with a negative pinion angle. That is why the knuckles need to be cut and rotated. 1/2 ton axles had 5 on 5.5" BP 3/4 ton were 8 on 6.5" BP.
But I agree for the price get them, you can always sell them if you don't want to fuss with them.

Yes Scout d44's are passenger side front diff, same as a CJ. They're quite a bit wider than your narrow-track CJ axles, the rear will go right in but you may need to outboard your front spring hangers a little in order to make it work with the front diff and keep the front axle centered.

The Scout front 44 has 0º caster, so you will get some wander when driving on the road unless you have the inner C cut and rotated to around +5º caster.
