Exhaust replacement

Hey fellow jeeperz

I just ordered a new cat, muff, and tail pipe for my 93 xj. I am getting all my tools together today, and the parts come in tommorow, I got a Maremont cat, and a super C muffler. Wondering if anyone here has replaced these same elements successfully, and has some tips or pointers. I have a reciprocating saw, and I am wondering if I need to buy a grinder to get the job done. The brackets and mounts are extremely corroded, and will be quite difficult to remove. Ive got a bunch of blades though, and a hard head.

Everybody needs a grinder. When I got mine I bought cut-off wheels for it and rarely ever use my sawz-all anymore (although the sawz-all is better on exhaust pipe). I just replaced my exhaust and sold the converter for what the new muffler cost. You should be able to get 30.00-40.00 dollars for that old cat. Also, I prefer the tail pipe exiting out the side, behind the spring hanger so it won't bury in the dirt while backing into/up a bank etc.

I usually put a 3/4" block of wood under the exhaust where it goes over the transmission cross member. If you don't leave yourself enough clearance it will bang on the cross member when your done. I tighten up all the clamps then remove the block of wood, it always seems to settle some.
Check the clearance where the exhaust goes by the shock absorber and beside the fuel tank.
Avoid twisting and hammering too much trying to get it apart, it is all eventually connected to the exhaust manifold and stressing that more than necessary is to be avoided.

Pretty easy fix. Only had to make a few cuts, and it all fell out. Got rid of that terrible rattle caused by the heat shield, and she is definitely purring now.

Toughest part was getting the old cat off, had to make a diagonal cut along the intake and peel back with a flat bar, eventually it came off after some convincing.
