RE: Do YJ half doors have locks?

A cohort at work has a 91 yj with 33" tires and wants to know which would be a better caliper... phenolic vs metal piston. Any comments please. Frank

SYE Question

Most often, when engineers designing a braking system specify phenolic pistons, they make the choice because this synthetic material transfers less heat from the pads to the brake fluid in the caliper. It's possible that under extreme conditions, using steel pistons in one of these vehicles could raise brake fluid temperatures to dangerous levels.

I recommend using the stock calipers and the best pads available, the ones rated for towing and heavy duty use. Then consider a disc brake swap in the rear, or even better swap in a disc brake rear axle like the Ford Exploder 8.8 rear.

Better shafts, better housing, better brakes, limited-slip, choice in gear ratio (3.54-3.73-4.10) and ready to bolt in. I almost hope my D35 breaks so I can justify getting one of these. Would love to do this swap and a SYE/CV shaft all in one weekend. But $1500 for a working jeep ain't gonna cut it with the wife.
