Gearing Help Needed!

Hey folks,

Just wanted some imput. I'm running 32" tires on my 2.5L 99 TJ SE which is auto (two strikes against me). I honnestly dont have any mods when it come to engine or exhaust. Im not looking for major increase in HP. Doesnt run all that slow...

However, would you guys recommend a gear swap? What gears am I running in my TJ? What would you recommend switching to?

I drive my TJ as a daily driver...

A gear swap would be a good idea. I'm not real familiar with the 2.5 setup but you're probably running a 4.11 which came with the 27" tire package. If so, a 4.56 would be good, though I suspect a 4.88 would be ideal.

You've likely got 3.73 with a 2.5L auto, a swap to 4.88 would be a worthwhile investment.

Major stupid question ahead...

When re-gearing... what is best? Regearing BOTH axles? Or just the rear is OK?

Regearing just the rear is fine . . . so long as you take out the front driveshaft, and don't ever plan to put it in 4wd.

Seriously, you have to re-gear both axles, or you will have real problems when you put it in 4wd.
