headers

RE: is it drive line vibes?

Anyone running headers on a 4.0L??????????? What kind??How do you like it?

The Wheelers Prayer

We have borla headers on my dad's TJ. They are great, they came on his jeep and have a great warranty plan. Nice headers.

What exactly are the benefits of aftermarket headers? I've been told that cat converters take away alot of the power that a hot exauhst would add.

RE: hi_c is back... with problems

Benefits: smoother and increased volume of exhaust flow. The easier the motor can breathe, the more power that will be unleashed. Conversely, a cat-verter is basically a filter (a ceramic honeycomb to strip out the nasties), hence restricting air flow to some degree, decreasing power.

corey

A header on a 4.0l is a good idea anyway, since most 4.0l manifolds crack over time. Mine is right now and it sounds awful.

RE: Re: RE: Girl doing jumping jacks

its all jeep manifolds that crack, not just the 4.0, ive got borla headers on my 2.5, definate improvement

what about the difference between a shorty header (hookers) and longer headers? I have also seen 2 into 1 types and a tri-y design (something about connecting 2 cylinders that fire opposite eachother in the firing order). Are these all marketing scams or is one better for another application than another?

RE: i live in

here are some of the websites I've been looking at.
http://www.rocky-road.com/thorley.html (tri-y)
http://www.centuryperformance.com/jbaheaders/index.asp (shorty and something called a firecone)
http://www.pacesetterexhaust.com/jeep.htm (these look like the longer 2-into-1 type)
http://jeephorizons.com/news/edel_head_40.html (another tri-y type)
http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/ES/ESHHSCH/4WD.html (hooker headers they dont have my year but I still just looking around)

What about diameter? Should i by the largest pipes I can find, in that case i will find a way to bolt a dryer hose to my block, or can it be "too much of a good thing"

I would rather hear it from you guys, rather than each website, because you aren't trying to sell me anything(hopefully), and i can find some truth.

I am waiting for Gadget to give a lecture on this subject to confuse me even more. (jk) :D

RE: Paragon Feb 19th

the length of the header usually determines the torque curve. I'm more interested in what kinda of luck people are having with different brands......

Really? I've only heard of the 4.0 having that problem, pretty much from everyone I've talked to, and all the websites I've read. Yeah, I've heard of a couple of the 2.5's cracking, but not like the 4.0. Not that I'm doubting you, I just haven't heard anything along those lines. That was part of my decision making process in getting the 2.5. Do you have somewhere I can go to to read about it? I like to keep up to date on things like that.

Re: RE: headers

I have the Banks Torque Tubes headers. The first set lasted about 16 months before they cracked. There was a slight performance boost, but not worth the price of the headers. There is a lot of stress at the donut gasket, where it connects to the cross over pipe.

Banks did replace the cracked headers. I had to put the replacement set on my credit card and wait for the cracked ones to get back to Banks to get the credit back on my card. And, I had to pay for shipping - both directions.

yes that is called scavenging. the negative pressure behind a "burst" of exhaust creates a vacuum which helps "pull" the exhaust out of the next firing cylinder
