Help with Neighbors XJ

My neighbor is having problems with his 96 XJ. It will not start. I determined that it was not getting spark. Narrowed it back to the coil which tested bad. I replaced the coil but it still will not start. The weird thin is when I Put a test light on the posotive lead to the coil and he turns the ignition it will come on for a half second then turn off. Isn't this supposed to be full hot all of the time?

Another thing that has me curious is that when I checked to see if the rotor was spinning it was moving much slower than I would think but we were just cranking it. if this is odd let me know.

Sounds like a bad CPS (crankcase positioning sensor) There is a electrical connector next to a vaccum line on the drivers side firewall. Try unplugging this and re connect it. This connector typically fails not the senor. Replacing the sensor can be easy or hard depending on how many socket extensions you have.
