my 76 cj5 had a bad " go go gadget smoke screen , so i pulled the motor to replace bearings , rings and have head rebuilt, opened it up and DAAAAANNNNGGG! head looks ok to rebuild, but lower end needs alot of machine work, i need a short block bad, any one have a 258 straight 6 layin around, not lookin for a hand out ,,, just lookin for helps, thanks,

there are two here in corpus on craigslist for 300 bucks. have to contact the guy to see if he would let you have one cheap and ship it though
 
how much machining work? almost anything is savable with the right amount of money. personally I would invest in rebuilding what you have (assuming the machining is under $600) with new bearings and re-polished crank, that way you know what your getting. I have made the mistake of buying a used engine that I did not hear run, was told it ran great, upon disassembally, a wrist pin must have sheered because the piston was into the valves adn the rod was clear through the wall into the water jacket.
