I Bought a Lemon

I recently bought a 88 wangler with 120,000 miles. With in the first week of driving it, the clutch master cylinder had gone. The former owner had recently had the whole clutch redone. I have gotten the jeep home now and i am finding that I'm having a hard time up shifting from first to second and the downshifting form third to second. Also I have a problem with the choke on the carberator. I found that after running it for a wile at idle, if I hit the gas the choke engaged and it idle high and I can't kick it down. If anyone knows of a cure or the cause of the shift problem, or a cure for the choke problem, please let me know

It's not a lemon it's a Jeep. Don't mess with the factory carb I did and it still ain't right, replace it with a Weber. It sound's like the syncro's are going out in the transmission. Welcome to the wonderful world of jeeping.

If you bought it used and it doesnt need major repair, then it aint a jeep!

Don't sweat it... Do the repairs, then do more repairs, then do more repairs, soon you will have a jeep that will be indestructable!!!



Whats funny is when i bought my '82 CJ, it was painted BRIGHT YELLOW!!! Just Like a lemon!

ok, update on the lemon, I have bought a new rebuilt holley, it has a little hesitation, but I'm adjusting it little at a time... I's getting an price on a transmission, and hopefully my little rubbie will be shifting fine again in a few weeks ! later beefy[addsig]

New transmission? Take the thing out and just rebuild it! 120k miles? 120k is about the limit on the motor.

I have an 88 yj switch the carb. rebuild the transmission, and definitley get a juice box, It is an ignition upgrade. Even with a new carb it will still have some idle and accelerating problems. I couldn't passed 3,00 to 3,500 rpms without the enginge misfiring. The juice box puts in a bigger dist cap and 30,000 volt coil. I also did the nutter bypass. What a difference![addsig]

I just did the same thing (except for the nutter bypass) and it really does feel like a brand spanking new engine with the new carb and new ignition.

Now i just have to get around to setting the timing...

Just remember that it is 15 years old and in human years that is uh...... alot more than 15. Things break and wear out and you have to work to keep up the jeep deal. There are hardcore cj drivers that stick to their guns and that is cool. Just like there are YJ owners that stick to their guns, and so on. Do the math and look at the cost of repairs vs. do you really want to be a Jeeper! It's gotta be something you do for the love of a jeep cause if you are doing it for any other reason you are lost. You can be more comfortable in an suv, get better gas mileage in a ricer, haul more in a truck, but noithing is as fun to drive as an old breaking constantly, drafty, hard to get into, and out of, hard edged, gas drinking, ezly modified, work of art, All American Jeep! And no Jeep is trash!

before you go and fix the transmission retry to bleed the clutch, it takes a long time to get ALL the air out and they are stubborn. Just a thought...[addsig]

Tug N Pull, and Quinners, thanks of the advice, but I really wasn't calling my jeep trash. I love it and I'm going to keep it. Put all my money that I can get together and fix the transmission after I give it a gwick bleed or too. If i quote my father " I don't know how you put up with the wind noise, and all the drafts " my only reply to him is, " Its a Jeep !" I know that jeeps are for only one kind of people, and I really don't notice the noise, drafts and little things that bothers everyone eltse. I love my YJ and also my friends Beefy's CJ. The day that eather of those gets hurt is the day I cry... Thanks again GFD887[addsig]

Just for the record...i have nothing against yj's folks!...bfd887 happens to be a friend and i was just teasing him....i love all jeeps...well except the liberty (what is that anyway a minivan?) ok well thanx for helping him out...i try to help him out here and there and i know way more beyond my years but one can only experience so much with only a few jeeps!...o yea also...his yj is pretty kick ass...original paint and decals and it looks off the showroom floor...just needs a tweek or two...later beefy85cj7[addsig]

I bought my jeep last year for $1300 cause the guy couldnt pass the inspection.It has no rust what so ever.I did need to do the mc2100 carb upgrade.Put a lift and 33s on it.It has a i6 and can spin those 33s on the tar and its a automatic...Just keep putting the money into and you'll be happy!

when they say "its a Jeep thing....." we know its true... you fix whats broke and keep on jeepin.... i actually shed a tear when i traded off my first jeep (91 YJ Sahara) but didnt when i sold the Harley... funny, you build a Jeep and then build memories... yea... my current 89 has no full hard top, no soft top, but i have a bikini top, soft doors, a wind jammer on the cage to keep most of the wind out in the winter and sweatshirts and hats to keep me warm, no A/C but survive the (115+ degree) summers... my wife keeps telling me my jeep is TOTALLY impractical and stupid, only seats two, cant go shopping at 25 different places in the same trip, but my little 4 yr old loves riding in it... so i just look at her Mazda MPV and tell her.... "its a Jeep thing.... you wouldnt understand"... (and i dont see her standing in the garage of hours at a time thinking of "what next... hmmmm....") enjoy...

A funny thought.

Yes a funny thought here...I bought a lemon as well. Off the show room floor to be-in-fact.
It all started the hateful day in 2001 when my 98 dodge ram 1500 broke down for the 10th time and was waiting at the stealer-ship for another warranty repair. I walked into the jeep showroom and well I bought the lemon.
To this day it has cost me over 9000$. Funny thing is I don't mind a bit.



Ok almost all of that has been in upgrades. We take our jeeps out and drive them over the roughest country we can find and expect them to get us home again. With out breaking mind you. But it happens once in too many awhiles.
But it is a Jeep thing and we all understand that.
Fix her up and have fun finding the next thing to break.
It's the jeepsters way of life.
