I'm in the process of buying a 1997 jeep Cherokee sport. One minor issue is the obvious crack on the frame that supposidly happens by the steering box. The guy said it was welded and the box was replaced. I just need a wheel alignment. Even if it was welded and I get an alignment done will the weld still hold the steering and frames integrity? It wasn't in an accident. Just stress crack. Any help would be appreciated.

stay far away once stress cracks in xjs start thers no stopping it .

There are some aftermarket braces to reinforce that area, I'll look later and see if I can find them. It's a common failure on XJ's that are wheeled hard.

So now you know it was wheeled hard to cause that crack. What else has been stressed from the way it was used?

I installed one of those after market braces on the frame rails both steering box side and passenger also the steering box xross reinforcement rail steering box still moves, best word of advise is if its cracked stay clear its more headachs than its worth and it only gets worse in time my 88 has stress cracks everywhere and they grow like the plague
