Ignition SNAFU

I just replaced my 4.0 engine in my cherokee. Now the thing starts rough then it will not accelerate and it backfires when I push the gas. I have double checked the wiring plug wires and all over and over. Now I did not mark the flex plate when I took the thing out could there be a problem with the timing pickup bolted in the bell housing? Is there a better book on my 89 cherokee. sounds like your ignition timing is off... also consider all parts of the ignition (did you do a tune up?) and fuel delivery, including pump, filter, injectors. is this engine FI'd or carb'd? [addsig]

Did you swap a EFI for an EFI? Did you take the distributor out of the engine at any time? Was it a running motor before you put it in, or a rebuild?[addsig]
