Is this brake rotor cracked?

I've got some faint lines and one of the front rotors on my 2005 Wrangler. Are these cracks? It almost looks like an indentation where the pad would sit.

I don't mind replacing the rotors if it makes sense, but at the same time I don't want to waste money.

That looks like corrosion in the outline of a pad.what does it feel like? Since it has that pitting, i would think you want ro replace it in case those are weakened and it does crack now

Feels fine, and you're right, it does look like the outline of a pad. The Jeep sat for a week or two, so corrosion is likely.

I may go back and hit it with brake clean and see if the outline comes off, or maybe just run it around a couple of miles. If the outline is permanent then I think that I should replace both rotors (and pads).

T does look like the pad.


I had an f150 stock rotor with a quarter sized rough spot like that. It would wear pads fast and lock up on the first brake application when cold.


Imagine pulling out from parallel parking and getting up to speed. Light turns yellow so you gently apply the brake. AND THEY LOCK UP!!! Screech to an immediate stop.

to find cracks in metal, they sell a spray product that shows up any hairline cracks in metal, they may have it at auto parts stores. 2 diffrent cans, one is the actuator the second is the developer. spray the actuator on, then spray the developer on . Any cracks in metal well show up red.

Try scrubbing the disc with steel wool or emery cloth to see if it goes away.

Short of that, if in doubt, throw them out. Discs are not all that expensive these days.

this is one of the products used in non-destructive testing/inspections. its a type of dye penetrant. its used a lot in the oil refineries and in aviation to look for cracks in odd shaped parts and non-ferrous metals.

I put about 50 mi on it, but the cracks look just as bad as they did before.

However, we're back in business boys. Two new rotors and pads from RockAuto.

I'm glad I noticed those rotors when I did.

They are pretty close though.

Either way, no worries about that anymore

Any brake dust cleaner sprayed on???
Plus it looks like it may have happened before.

That’s a crack or manufacture flaw.
