I'm not sure if the current auto hubs work like the early auto's did but here's what they used to do :
The early auto hub used to work like a ratchet wrench, lock in the forward direction only. Which is usually ok, but....
When I am working sloppy stuff i ease my jeep gently forward so as not to stick it tight or sink it in a hole.
As soon as I start to spin tires, I reverse and back my way out some, and if I can, take a different line through the muck.
Great. Unless you have auto hubs that unlock when you backup. What would happen is I would backup a couple of feet, the hubs would unlock, and my rear tires would now spin not being assisted by the front axle anymore. And I'm out wading through the muck spooling out winch cable.
So, I use manual hubs.
