Need the fan shroud?

I found that I had a waterpump leak, so I am in the process of replacing it.
(also found that the replacement pump doesn't have the studs to hold the fan on, so I'll be using short bolts I suppose)
Question: Do I need to have the fan shroud for anything? Or does it simply take up room? I don't know, so any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

shroud helps direct air flow to help cool radiator leave it in ,removing could cause cooling issues

I just changed the waterpump on my brothers Jeep, and I had to use the old studs. It's not to hard if you know what you're doing.

So I learned 2 new things today.

1.) I can reuse the old studs.
2.) Leave the radiator shroud in.

I did both of these things. Thank you for your responses.

I guess I was thinking of a picture I saw of an electric fan setup that didn't have a shroud. Is there some kind of difference with an electric setup?
I'm not really sure of the advantages of the electric setup. Maybe someone can fill me in.
Anyway... This was my first waterpump replacement, and it went very well. For some reason I'm no afraid of tearing into my Jeep to fix something. Weird. :)

Thank you all.

Water pump was one of my first fixes to
X2...keep shroud...anything that aids in keeping engine cool is a good thing!

Electric fans have their own shroud, it's the housing for the fan. There is no shroud needed between an electric fan and the front of the engine, only to the fan blades.

When I first got 'Black Betty' she had only a large external (pusher) fan. She ran hot except on cooler days so I reversed the polarity on the fan and made it a puller fan on the inside of the engine compartment. Still on the hottest days she would still heat up, so got a three row radiator and a super flow water pump (restrictor plate on back), but still was running a little hot. Then I had a flashback to an old '66 Chevy Malibu I once had with similar issues until someone mentioned adding a shroud, once I did, problem solved.
So I added an Omix-Ada fan shroud (had to do some trimming for the lower rad. hose and drain plug) and now with these single digit winter temperatures we've been having it's running only at 160 :o
