I just picked up a 99 xj today ,4x4,4.0.auto. Need to know what axles front,back? and how big of meats can I put on with 4.5"s of lift and stock?

Dana 30 up front, in the rear you'll likely have a Chrysler 8.25, or a Dana 35. I don't think they used Dana 44's in the later year XJs, but I suppose it is a possibility.

4.5 should clear 32's no problem, 33's may be a tight fit if you plan to wheel it, but a little fender trimming and or cut-out flares will rectify that.

I think you're right, more than likely a 8.25 or a Dana 35. Hope for the 8.25
you should be able to ID it pretty easy.

Go here, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Cherokee_(XJ). Gearing will be labeled on the left lip of the front dif cover, just have to scrape it off. I learned all this last week when I bought a 98xj with 6.5lift. 4.5 should do 32s but it will rub still while flexing. So it just depends on your plans for it.
