I have a 00 TJ and the transmission is going out. I have found a 6 speed transmission from an 05 TJ to take its spot, I just want to know if it is a direct bolt on.. Have any of you done this before? I dont have money to do the SYE at this time, I just need a replacement transmission..

Any info would be great. i.e. transmission durability etc. Thanks

I have the six speed in my 05 TJ and, so far, it has been great. The extra gear keeps me in the power range most of the time, even with 31s and 3.07 gears. I really think that if you shift it right - stay in the power band of the engine - you can get better MPG (sometimes I get as much as 19-20 MPG). It shifts very nicely. It has an external slave cylinder - which is nice. This transmission has a reverse blocker. Very important - ONLY shift into 6th gear coming directly out of 5th. DO NOT let the shift lever spring into neutral or the reverse blocker will release and you risk grinding up reverse. There are a couple of things I don't really like about the transmission - they probably wouldn't bother most normal people:lol:. I feel the shift rails and forks are a little complicated and kind of light duty. They look like they are all pressed steel. This might not really matter since it's a small transmission. The six speed has an integral bell housing and NO inspection plate (some other Jeep trannies might be this way too, I'm not sure). This means that you CAN NOT look inside at the clutch parts after it's together. The transmission case is all aluminum and fairly light (might be damaged easily). The case is a split type two-piece case which makes working on it fairly difficult (you need special jigs and fixtures to line everything up during a rebuild. One more:p - you need to use SPECIAL oil which can be hard to find (dealer item). Overall I really do like the six speed. I just hope it holds up to the rest of the Jeep!! Best of luck - John

FYI, The fluid used on the NSG 370 is the same on the NV3500 which is MS-9224. just in case you wanted to know that.

Thank You SteelHeadz,

Yeah, I think I saw that in the book somewhere... I just couldn't find it for sale anywhere except at the dealer (which is a pain to get to). I'm told Quaker State and Pennzoil both make an equivalent. Do you know if the MS-9224 is synthetic? I didn't know it was used in the NV3500 - You can learn something every day... If only I could remember what I learn... - John

From what i have read , it is Not synthetic. Source?, i beleive it's Pennzoil. When there's a shortage of the mopar brand, Penzzoil is what's substituted.
