As a kid i camped in White Haven, PA in Luzerne County (i think). Anyway there was what seemed like miles of coal "stripping's", as we called them behind this campground. Trails led in and out of the woods acroos the coal fields. It was really cool. People would ride their quads back there and sometimes i would see a jeep or two. I was wonderong if anyone knew where there is an access to the strippings or if anyone knows what i'm talking about. :-? [addsig]

I had family that live in Luzerne county and that is about all. Never had my jeep up there or a vehicle that was capable of exploring. So i couldn't tell you about off roading.

sorry

Cambrai County is another area with lots of strip mine areas. I live in Johnstown, and one nice area comes to mind. "The Bony Piles" I dont know the technical term for "Bony" but from what i understand its the piles of unusable coal that was mined. In our area we have an entire mountain side of it. Lot of cool little areas to ride. It gets more use from quads but jeeps do have alot of fun there to. :) [addsig]

Jeeptp75,

The "bony piles" are, as you mentioned, the waste byproduct (low grade coal and slate) produced by the coal crushing, refining and washing process.

The waste material is called "culm."

I grew up in NE Pennsylvania (North of Scranton) where we referred to those piles as "culm banks." I don't know why we called them banks, because many of those culm banks were indeed the size of small mountains.
