Rattle behind front left wheel, cant find source

I've been under it the past few day-- I believe it's the driveshaft to the front axel.

If the rattle is a firm knocking, and you have had your hubs in free for a long time, yes, that is most likely it.

For me, about 35 years ago, I learned this many Jeeps back and so, went with the CV joints at the TC, 1 ton DLs, and left the hubs in lock always. That was the end of that problem and the Jeeps would ride dead quiet and smooth and the end of constantly changing out U-joints and such. Unless road towing, hubs really are quite passe'.

Just some thoughts,

Robert

well, thinking more on it, i believe they are normally engaged but since the front axle rides in an unlocked state all the time because of the vacuum not pulling, it lets them rotate freely all the time.

what year and model jeep do you have?

I had a rattle on my 05 that I couldn't find. Turns out that my lower rear shock bolt was loose, and would rattle over bumps. It didn't seem loose, because the shock kept pressure on the bolt until I went over a bump.

I didn't find it until I had someone bounce on the bumper while I was under the Jeep.
