Rear Main Seal Repair...

Well my rear main seal went again... this happend this past may but it stopped leaking once I put thicker oil in along with STP addative. My question is, is this difficult to fix for someone with moderate skills? I talked to my mechanic when this first happend and he said that the transmission has to be pulled out. But then I found an article on the web showing that it can be done by just taking off the oil pan. I should have bookmarked that page! Well if anyone has done this I would like to hear about how you did it, how long it took, how easy/difficult it was. Thanks

I am not sure what kind the jeeps use some have to have the transmission off and some do not. I think if you take the transmission of it gives you more room. I need to do mine also but I am waiting until I replace my clutch so I will have the transmission off anyway.

I'm not sure about the Yj, Tj. I have heard Graewulf talk about changing one in an Xj, and he swears he will never do it again lol. I believe (not sure) that the seal is a two piece gasket, all you ned to have is a dental pick, or something small to get to the top part of the seal. Maybe if he reads this, he can jump in and offer some advice.

Well that link I posted above explains exactly how to do it, and it looks fairly simple. They said the part that took the longest was getting the oil pan off and cleaning it.

I know the actual replacement wasn't hard, but getting to everything was a pain..I believe he pulled the transmission and the moter apart, and dropped the transmission, or raised the motor.
The article does say that the one they are working on is an XJ, as far as if it's the same, I'm just not sure.
What year is your Jeep ?

Okay..just read up in my Haynes 1987-2000. They say to drop the oil pan, and the rest is exactly the same as the article. I hope that helps you, have fun !!!!!!!!

Damn I didn't even see that, it does say xj...
I have a 91 YJ, were you looking in a hanes for the xj or yj?

If the rear main keeps leaking, it may mean you need new main bearings, or there is a groove on your seal mating surface.
