Shimmy while stopped while in Drive gear....

Where do I start to look for the cause?
Transmission I would assume, or driveline?

Just bought an 00 XJ 4.0, runs great, no driving problems but when stopped at a light there is a vibration coming from the undercarriage. It creates a loud-er echoing throughout the rear cargo area. When I put it in neutral it stops.

I am sure one of you XJ Xperts knows exactly what she be doin'........ care to share?

Much obliged!

Hee hee hee... OK then...

It's 90 percent sure to be one of two things...

While it's doing it, pull up gently on your 4X4 lever. The linkage comes ever so slightly loose, and causes a very annoying rattling while in gear and stopped at a light from under the center console, slightly lifting up on the handle, as if you were going to put it into 4H makes it stop...

Or, the other possibility is that your exhaust hanger has come loose, and the exhaust is rattling on something, check the underbody along the exhaust line, you're looking for any shiny areas on either the exhaust or things very near to it, to indicate a rubbing vibration when in gear...

I only hee hee hee, because my 00 XJ 4.0 had the exact same problem, hence my proposed solutions, Nearly every XJ since the dawn of time has the 4X4 shifter rattle, to my knowledge, and the exhaust thing, I was told about at the dealership, long long ago when it was still under factory warranty...

Let us know if these suggestions help you out.

And welcome to Jeepz! :)

May also check the condition of motor mounts and transmission mount.

That may be closer to where the problem may be..... I kind of mislabled the noise in my original post, its a really deep vibration noise, if that makes sense, kind of muted.

But a bad mount could be the culprit too though huh? I will have to get underneath tomorrow and check.......... damn Oregon sunshine..... yet another Sunday with a soaking wet back!

Thanks again guys!
