soundproofing?

Before you go this route, you might want to check the some more common causes of road noise...

tires - are you getting uneven wear? this will cause them to be louder than they should
exhaust - is everything tight & quiet? might need a muffler, sometimes you can't tell but they can get louder at high speeds
door gaskets - if they don't seal properly they will let in the road noise
window gaskets - same a s door gaskets
Also, you might want to change the axle and t-case fluids if you haven't recently. old fluid can contribute to louder gears.

I'm sure there are other things that will help before you go rip out the carpets.

Borrow someone's Wrangler for a while..........then that Cherokee will sound nice and quite

Grae! Thanks for responding, ok I've got totally new exhaust from the headers back, changed the gear oils recently, redone the drive shaft, got new tires last spring-so those typical characteristics are ruled out. Although I thought I might just first do an undercoating in the wheel weels b.c most road noise is from the tires and that would eliminate that problem--that'd probably be easier and cheaper than tearing out the interior.

I'm sure the door/window gaskets are worn --she is 12 yrs old, but still no water leaks, although that doesnt rule out sound leaks. Dont get me wrong she's a great vehicle and in town I dont really notice the road noise, its just that on a 3 to 5 hour road trip you start feeling it (I live in texas after all towns just arent that close together you know).

mud! you're crackin me up! yeah I know I had a ladyfriend in houston w/ a wrangler, sahara edition --reminded me of riding around in a humvee back in the day when they were military only! hahahaha

the cherokee is pretty quiet until you go sit in a grand and then you realize how quiet they can be, anyway thanks for the input y'all --its just an idea I'm kickin around-

I may just go w/ a coating on the wheel wells first since that can be done externally and cheaply. Thanks again y'all!

Ear plugs would be the cheap way to go! hehehe During the space race the USA spen over a Million dollars to prefect the ball point pen to handle the need to wright in gravity free space, The USSR just used a Pencil! Food for thought. tug

thanks so let me ask you was it a worthwhile investment?
dont get me wrong I got good tunes in the cherokee also (not nearly as good as my old car) but they are pretty damn good

really what I want is a quieter ride on road trips which I love to take

I've got a truck with dynomatt in it and I am very happy. Mine too is due to a "slightly" modified stereo. If you want to spend the money, I would definatly reccomend it. When the stereo is not on (very rare except for when cops are around!) there is almost no road noise at all--even on the freeway.

ABSOUTLY!! I wouldnt hesitate to do it again to my cherokee. my mother just picked up an 87' cherokee and we had to drive it bck from denver (450 miles) and it drove my nutz listening to all of the road noise. when i get into my jeep, the only thing you hear is the stereo. (and not cuase it is up so loud either!!) I dont think I would call it acousticly dead but it is considerably more quiet than most other cars that are soudprofed!
when you shut the door you can feel a seal that is formed inside the cab!! LOL

again the stuff i used is called raammat. it costs $100 per roll, which covers 62.5^3, and is one of the best alternatives to dynamat.
I say alternative because it dosent cost nearly as much per^3, but the quality is the exact same though.

I used two complete rolls and did the entire inside of my cherokee, top to bottom.
drop Rick an email (if you are intrested) and tell him chris coates sent ya!!

When you say it is the same as Dynomatt, which Dynomatt are you comparing it too? Is it the regular stuff, or the "extreme" (or what ever it's called)? If it's similar to the higher quality stuff, I'll definatly have to look into it, cause that seems like a much better price----especially when you have two layers of the higher quality Dynomatt, AND an additional layer of the regular, in every tiny little area of a fullsize truck!!!

it is in the same catagory as the extreme from dynomat. I am not sure exactly why it is comparable to the thicker extreme but it is. and I can guarentee you that if you were to double layer everything inside a vehicle with raammat you would have a VERY quiet ride!!

I doubled everything in my doors because they are being used as enclosures for my 7" mid bass, and they sound great. nice low end extensions (like they were sealed) and clear mids.

for the price you cant go wrong even if you dont like the product!! LOL
a word to the wise though, THIS STUFF IS EXTREMLY STICKY. if it happens to come in contact with another peice of the tar, forget about trying to pull it apart. you will rip the alum. backing off of it before it will give up!! (I have done this LOL)

that is also another big plus over most of the others on the market is the alum backing. and it is plyable. just lay the mat out in the sun for 20 mins and go to town with it.
one more plus, is that with most tar products you are left with a nasty smell that takes forever (sometimes never) to go away. RAAMMAT has no smell once installed.

and no I am not a rep of Raammat either. its just really good stuff.
