The Cherokee seems sick

4 months ago I bought a 1997 Cherokee with an inline 6 cyl 4 ltr. engine and an automatic transmission. its got almost 150000 miles on it And usually seems to run very well, there are several things that really worry me about the beast.

First, every fourth or fith trip I take with it the check engine light comes on, I went the cheap way and had the guys at auto Zone check the computer code and It said something about the sensor that controls shifting in the transmission, when I do the key trick it Flashes the number "55". Anyone know what this is and an easy fix?

Second, I was driving it today up a slight incline and it seemed to be dropping and raising in rpms rappidly, (from 1000 to 1500 and back again several times over a period of 5 seconds. its the first time it has happened and Ive put almost 8000 miles on it since I got it.

I changed the fluid 4000 miles ago and I watch the RPM's closely for any irregularities. Another thing is im not sure if I should be able to feel the engine as much as I do when driving. Lastly(i know its been a lot) the fog lights. they never worked since I bought it. recently I decided to try to fix them...try is the right word. The cherokee had two small blue oval lights mounted to the bumper, that were wired(poorly) into the existing fog light wiring by a previous owner. I took them off(they were filled with mud and water) and rewired the factory fog lamps. I replaced the fuse, and the bulbs, but no luck getting them to work. I trashed the little blue ones.

Any ideas on any of these things would be great.

Sounds like you have a faulty sensor or some sort. I don't know the error codes for the '97 XJ, but I don't think the 55 meant anything. I found this.

From a 1997 jeep:
Turn the ignition key ON THREE TIMES in succession:
ON : OFF : ON : OFF : ON
(within FIVE seconds)
Count the number of times the check engine lamp on the dash flashes. The number of times it flashes is the error code. There will be a short pause between the flashes representing the different digits of the code. Longer pauses separate individual trouble codes. These codes are 2 digits only. Code 55 (*****_*****) will be the last code to be displayed. In '98 Chrysler changed the codes.

Borrow someones OBD Scanner to find the code and reset it if you don't have one. It's a good bet that your symtoms are related or you can easily fix them with the codes. As far as the lights......rewire them or trash em. They may not work all together.
