Thinking about getting a SWB Jeep.

I know you all have some opinions. I like them all...YJ, TJ, CJ7. Talk me into one of them.

It will be a daily driver. Thus, a 4 cyl isn't out of the question... but I've never driven the 4cyl so I don't have a clear opinion on them. I am leaning to the YJ and TJ due to their being newer. (obviously I'd prefer a 6)

I'm just sick of having to rush or hurry mods on my XJ, because it is a DD. I'd like to be able to leave it in the garage for a while if necessary.

Eventually, you know I'll end up modifying the new Jeep considerably... it's a disease.

Let the debate begin... :D

i'd say TJ, but thats cause its what I have and i know and love. I got no beef with CJs or YJs. full coil suspension and fuel injection. TJs got the best of everything. But I do like the CJ alot. I dunno, all personal choice i guess. hope it goes better than my XJ hunt that came to a crashin hault.

I know I will get arguments but I think my TJ is the best of both worlds. The tub's not rotted out, the engine and transmission are original (no doubt its new) and I'm worry free daily driving every day. I have luxuries (a/c , compact disc) and I have ruggedness (mud terrains, lift, and winches). I think its one bad booty of a vehicle and matches all my styles day in and day out. It's only a four cylinder so some days it is a bit slower then I am, that would be the ONLY drawback I see so far.

Just my opinion.

how do you feel about the 4 cylinders? I have a friend offering a 98 for 7500, and I know I could talk him down.

Mingez, do you live in a hilly area? That is the only time I think a 4 cyl is really a bore. Mine is adjusted to flat land out east and when I have to drive in the mountains, there is a lot of shifting and pushing going on. Other than that, I really can't tell a difference. It's been good to me off and on road in the past year although I haven't been balls to the wall extreme I drive it alot. I have about 18 K on it this first year and no complaints with the 2.4L

The four cylinder isnt a bad little engine with the proper gearing. But you will miss the power and torque of the inline six. The only thing I dislike about TJs is the dash, very futuristic if you will, lots of plastic and junk. I own two YJ's and will be selling one shortly after our move to Vegas to get a TJ that will be my daily driver.

Lady, Yes, it's hilly, but not crazy hilly. But I do go to the mountains to fish a lot. (Not as much as I'd like) and Geo-Caching.

I normally wouldn't even consider a 4 cyl, but with gas prices the way they are.

Lanieac, yeah I'm not that hip on the dash either. But I love the body, and aesthetics.

R3con99TJ, long time no see, hell yeah. But I plan on rockin' my XJ down in El Chuco.

Both my brother and I drive EFI 4.0 YJ's as daily drivers, a 91 and a 93. Sure the ride quality is proably better with the coil springs, but if you find a good deal on a YJ that is 91 or newer with EFI, consider it. I would also have to say since you have a 4.0 in your XJ you would proably miss the power if you downgrade to a 4 cyl. Sure they are good engines but the power output of the two engines can't compare.

I agree with holding out for the 4.0 TJ. I have had a 4cyl YJ and TJ and a 6cyl TJ. Definitely Definitely Definitely would go with the 6 cyl TJ over the other two. The power and joy of driving is alot better in the TJ and you dont loose any offroad performance. Of course it always comes down to a money issue. For my hard earned buck I want my 4.0 TJ

don't base your opinion on gas mileage. the diffrence is extremly marginal.
everyone seems to think the 4 cylinder will be better on gas, but there really isn't much of a diffrence. if there is hills and such, the diffrence will quickly swing to the side of the I-6 due to being able to stay in a higher gear (ie lower rpm).

raingler nets??

10:Leaf sprung stability
9: no death wobble
8: millions of parts (and cheaper parts)
7: you can buy one in good condition for a very reasonable price
6: If you get a 91 you can have slash-back roll bars and a 4.0 (the perfect Jeep in my book)
5: the simplicity of the suspension leaves you soooo many options if you plan to lift.
4:you can remove trackbars, swaybars and still have a safe ride on the road (shackle reversal)
3: a soft top wont cost you $600
2: a hard top wont cost you $1200

....and the #1 reason to own a YJ Wrangler!................

SQUARE HEADLIGHTS

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Still thinking.

But just to spite you TC... I think I'm gonna buy a YJ and put round headlights on it. Hehehehehehehe!

I don't really frequent the SWB part of the site all that much. But what are the major differences between the TJ and the Late model YJ's. I don't need to know about aesthetics or anything.

Are there any advantages, performance-wise, going with one over the other. I know the costs of the YJ will be better, but what about performance?

Thanks you guys.

I can't believe no one here has said CJ! Get a CJ and build it. You don't want a stock CJ YJ or TJ so why not get a CJ and build it like you want it. You don't have the crappy looking dash of the TJ and the crappy looking grill (sorry guys, nothing against the YJ but the square lights just don't look right to me). My CJ's run and drive as well as a YJ and I didn't have to do the major mods necessary to make a TJ not look like a grocery getter. CJ's just have character. I got one for $4K last year with 105K, 6 cyl, T176, Renegade package with AC and a Hard top / steel doors. Needs a weber and a paint job (no rust) to be ready to go..... My trail rig (pictured next to dad's scrambler) has been completely rebuilt from the ground up, but I still have a heck of a lot less than any used TJ's around here and that CJ has new EVERYTHING.

aesthetically, CJ's are probably one of my favorites. But Tug sold his in favor of another YJ, and fuel injection is something I favor. Parts, aftermarket... I dunno. Besides, I can always make the grill on a YJ round.

Ummm wm69... crappy crappy crappy, you make the CJ sound like it's flawless! We would all be driving CJs here! One bad thing about the CJs is they have this bad rep. for THE TUBS RUSTING TO PIECES! There is a reason most CJ owners are looking for YJ tubs all the time. Or you could go buy new everything for a CJ...

Mingez, the major differences between the late YJs and the TJs are the springs and interior obviously, the rear fender wells allow more room in the back seat of the TJ, the soft tops are a heck of alot easier to put up and down, YJs are cheaper to lift, TJ flares allow more tire clearance... did I miss anything? I am willing to admit as a YJ driver that the list above favors the TJs, but I'm sure your like most jeepers and have limited funds. If we could I'm sure we would all have a TJ with all the bells and whistles on it just to have a change from the YJ or CJ...

YJs still a jeep, and you can have a mean one for a fraction of the price of a mean TJ
