thought putting my lift on would be easy...

i woke up this morning @6:30 to put my 2" budget lift, new shocks and disconnects on. after arriving at my parents house around 7:00 i started my "easy" project  . after putting the rear of the jeep on jack stands and taking off the tires i started on the passenger side shock. got 2 of the bolts out with no problems. when i got to the 3rd on, the bolt decided to be stubborn and snap off inside the frame  . it was the bolt near the gas tank. after a few choice words i started to drill. after a half four of drilling the bit just wouldnt go any farther. so much for plan a. on to plan b. i took a punch and a 5lb mini sledge and drove the bolt (along with the threads) out. i retapped it with a slightly bigger thread and proceeded.
after fighting for an hour to get the bolt out, i installed the budget lift and went to the other side. that side went without a hitch. the back is done. :D
on to the front. after removing the wheels i start with the sway bar end links. the driver side has a torx bolt on it. OF COURSE i dont have that size. i try an impact wrench with allen wrenches in the torx hole. no luck. i then get a pipe wrench and put it on and with the impact, it comes right off. on to the other side. i then notice that someone already had this side off at one time (i was told when i bought the 2000 wrangler that a 50 yr old nurse owned it and never had a problem.) and there was a bolt in it. no problem. i take that side off easily. then on to the shock. i sprayed wd-40 on the nut on top of the shock and let it sit. when i start taking it off, the nut stops about 3/4 the way off and wont budge. of course i turn harder and strip the little flat spots at the top of the stud. after trying pipe wrenches and vise grips, i had to use a cutting wheel and cut the retaining cup off the top of the shock, and cut the shaft off. then i notice that there is no retaining clip in the coil on that side. other side went without a hitch, on to the disconnets.
i put all the disco stuff on (rubicon express discos)and find that nothing lines up. after close inspection i notice that my sway bar looks bent and twisted a little. after some minute adjustment with the now well used 5 lb. sledge, i beat the bottom tabs over the 1/4 insh or so i needed. i line up the discos slide one side in and pin it, go to the other side and that side needs to come down almost an inch!!! so i put a jack under the axle and jacked it up till it was in place. when i put it back down it looked like the sway bar didnt twist so i dont know what is going on there. i finally finished up at 3:00 p.m. for some reason i thought that this would be an EASY project. what could go wrong? man..was i wrong.
anyway it looks cool and rides awesome so i am not that displeased. cant wait to take it on the trails.

I laughed the whole way through. We've all been there in some way shape or form working on a Jeep. My wife just laughs when I tell her I'm going to do some work on the Jeep but I'll only be around an hour or so then I'll be done.

Glad you made it through it. Got any pics?

That is how every jeep project goes, from changing oil to installing axles... But it makes us love the jeep even more every time...

I did the same thing. This will be a breeze through and here we go. the day job turned into a 2.5 day job then the fun started figureing out why the thing vib,s at a setting idle in nutural and why does the right rear seem to have a pop sound now and ect....... But when the work is done and the bugs are worked out there is a great sence of ez and pride that makes you forget most of the problems you were faced with. tug

MURPHY'S LAW............what can go wrong will go wrong.........all the time

But as long as it was worth it and the Jeep is better off now than before.... makes worth the blood and sweat that was put into it.....

TBI question

Hey Tug, did you figure out why the right rear had a "pop" post lift?
Mine did that too, to me sounded like the plastic bump stop spacer was jiggling over some bumps. I pulled the whole right rear apart again and checked everything and still couldn't find it. At this point, I've decided to live with it because its not that bad nor is it getting worse. However, seeing you describe a pop in the right rear made me think you might have had the same issue and possibly a solution?

hehe...nice grae, thanks for the interesting info.

ps-i hope our budget lift doesnt give us as much trouble in our zj's.

Black soft uppers with round corners for YJ

LOL, that is funny! I wish mine only took 1 day. It was 2 days here. And, yes it was a budget lift! I don't know I guess Joe and I work slow.. :? But, we had fun, and got it done. The best part was taking it to Paragon, to test it out.

laura, i was just looking at your sig, you need a nice sunny day picture of your tj. something without the dreary sky in the background. and with the top down

LOL, it would be nice, huh. Come summer I will get one up...but I just lifted it in Dec. and the tires on in Jan..so that pic was taken in January..actualy Jan. 2 or somewhere around there..hence the hard top. It is a big depressing, huh?

haha ok. yeah it is a bit depressing cause i was just getting ready to go outside and was like damn its crappy out. then i realized i was basing that on your picture, so i opened my shades, and its actually not too bad out.

Just a point of interest for future people.. on many newer TJs and XJs (maybe WJs too..) that torx bolt (and the reason it gave you so much trouble) on the lower sway bar link has a spline on it - it is a PRESS FIT! If you are replacing the bolt with a pin for a quick disconnect, you need to PRESS it out.. you WILL snap a torx wrench if you try and turn it.... just thought I would pass that on....

on a 2000 TJ, try putting a lift on a 79 CJ that had never had any of the suspension's bolts or fastners even loosened up. every bolt was cut off in some fashion or another.

Here are some carnage pics taken from my lift install on a 94 about two years ago

The first is the factory sway bar link
the second is what was left of the springs and the third is another pic of the springs. There was a lot more cutting than this but did not want to clog up this board!
My lift took two days all by my lonesome and tool of choice was a plasma cutter!
