so i cant stand the sound in my 2004 TJ so im in the works of putting a sub in my rear seat (thanks to TerryMason) but i also want to replace my front speakers with 5.25 inch speakers using an adapter plate on ebay but will it really make a difference?

I put the replacement 4X6 3-way in the dash and they sounded better. From there I put 5.25 4-ways above the windshield on a homemade bracket off the roll bar. And I'm much happier.
I'm sure you'll use a good quality speaker. I used 4-way and I could hear the highs much better.

I used the adapter plates in the dash and also went up a size on the roll bar speakers and I think it made a difference. Bigger is always better when it comes to speakers. It's a cheap and easy upgrade.

For the speakers you used in the dashboard adapter plates did you use 2 way or 3 way speakers?

2 Way. I took the Alpine speakers from the sound bar and put them in the dash and bought some 6.5" for the sound bar. They are all 2 way.

I didn't have to do any cutting on mine and it's an 04 as well so you SHOULDN'T have to either.

so for the front dashboard speakers i simply drilled 2 holes on each side and fit a 5.25 speaker with no problem

haha yea just used a drill and drilled 2 holes for each speaker worked perfectly.

I noticed a little bit it equaled the sound out. One day i'm upgrading the sound bar to 6.5 but theres other things that need to be done like an oil change, 4.88 gears, d44, v8.............. shall i go on? haha

Eh, I just used 1/4" plywood and made my own. The 4x6's wouldn't bolt up stock but this would work on round speakers too.

Used OE speaker as a template.

Used spacer ring to cut the hole.

If you take acoustic mat and form it over a large bowl, then use it behind the 5 1/4 speaker Terry it will throw more sound into the cab. I bought the 5 1/4 adapters from 33 engineering, and I had no cutting to install them on my 01 TJ

If you want to make your own adapter plate for a 5.25 speaker, here is a template.
