i was just wondering if anyone knows what would be my best chioce for my cj7, a hard top or a soft top, because during the winter it gets really cold and if the soft tops stay pretty warm.

It's pretty much a matter of preference. I wouldn't own a hard top, just because I love the versatility of the soft top. I can't image the hard top being all that much warmer..........I think I'd look into heater options before I'd own a hard top. Of course, I own a TJ so my opinion isn't worth squat. I know my heater (with the soft top) will run you out of my Jeep.

But..............personal preference. That's basically what it's all about. Hard tops are a pain in the arse (IMHO).

If I wanna take my top down (or off), no matter where I am,......zip, zip - it's off!!!! If I had a hard top, I don't think it would be that simple. Plus, I can take it off myself without getting a hernia. And I don't have to worry about where to put it.....the back of the Jeep is fine, if that's all I've got. I don't care about "less noise" or roll-up windows or any other "advantage" that the hard top might bring. But that's just my personal preference. You may be different........just gotta think about what means the most to you. That's what's great about owning a Jeep................(Think you'd be pondering this if you owned a Honda?!?!?!?   )

The heater in my soft top '94 burns me out of the cab, too. I prefer the soft top for the same reasons Mud said. I drove an equal amount of soft vs. hard top Jeeps when looking to buy the YJ, and to me, all of the hard tops were actually noisier. It wasn't so much wind noise as it was an annoying "rumble" on any road surface.

As the rest said, it is a matter of preference. I will tell you though, that heat wouldn't be my concern.

I have a CJ7 w/ a bit of an overheating issue. The heat from the motor / heater blows me out and I wind up turning the heat off and cracking a window. It has hard doors currently and a soft top. I'm trying to repair my hard top to put it on, solely because I typically have a rear-seat passenger.

On the other hand, I have a CJ5 with a full soft top. It takes a bit to get warm, but once it does, it is very comfortable... and gets too hot on longer trips (hour or so).

There is a relatively typical upgrade to the heater called a Blazer motor upgrade. A couple searches here and on the net should get you more info.

That info aside, I would never, ever, never-ever have a Jeep without a soft top. Half of the fun is the convertible, no-door romping around in the summer... even if it is just on the street. So, if your question is one or the other, go with a soft top... hands down.

Food for thought,

i run my hard top all winter but as soon as the weather is nice enough, the roof and doors come off and stay off until it starts getting cold again, if it rains, you just drive faster

If I had to choose between the two, I'd say soft top. A soft top is not as warm as a hard top in the winter and it is noisier, but having just a hardtop on a CJ or Wrangler in the summer months is unthinkable to me.

I bought my CJ with a hard top and it sits out back behind the shop with 4 others (hard tops get lonely around here).

Hard top = SCRAPE ice off of glass windows.
Soft top = Warm up Jeep longer and MELT ice off of plastic windows.

My Jeep is on loan to a buddy that blew up his Toyota pickup and once he got used to the extra 10-15 minute warmup he was good to go with no more "brrrrrr........it was a cold ride to work this morning".

That's another thing I love about my electric fan, faster warm-ups! It only takes two or three minutes before it's blowing hot air now. Even a few weeks ago when it was -10, it only took about 5 minutes to blow hot air!!! And I stayed toasty warm under that soft top all the way to Wichita with wind chills at -15 to -20 (and much colder at 60 mph).
