Transfer Case Problem???

My 1988 4x4 recently started giving loud clunking noises from underneath. it does it during right hand turns (clank-clank-clank), and even while driving on the highway at times, a constant clanking. It sounds like it is coming from the rear, so I had someone look at the differential ,and all it's parts. Everything was fine. the u-joints are fine. so,this guy says it could be the transfer case, that sound will travel and make you suspect the rear.

the 4x4 works great, no problems. the transmission is great, shifts smoothly.

the confusing thing is this--the noise comes and goes. it does not do it each time I drive it. he has suggested it could be a chain, or some lose metal. any ideas, or similar experiences?

I am scared to drive it, because it sounds terrible.

Could be a bad transfer case chain, but I really suspect a bad transmission mount, or bad torque mount (next to transmission mount). Could also be a shot motor mount.

Try to determine if it happens mostly under hard acceleration, or sounds like metal on metal.

I'm with Bounty. Thats a good place to look. My transmission mount was busted and I had some serious clunking until I figured that out recently.

did the layout change again?

I only hear it when I hit 80 on the dash. Don't know what it is I just try to stay under 80. I don't even knwo where to start looking. Any advise?
