Transmission Question

I have a 2000 TJ Sahara 4.0 automatic and notice that there seems to be alot of pressure in drive with brakes on. If I put the transmission in neutral you can feel the back end of the jeep rock upward as pressure is released. I'm pretty sure it idles at correct rpm (around 600-800). Is this normal? I'm pretty new to TJ's so I have nothing to compare with. Thanks.

I'm not an automatic transmission specialist by any stretch but as long as there is no clunking or jerking while going from Park or Neutral into Drive and there is also no long (>1 second) delay of it engaging when shifted, I'd say it's pretty normal.

Due to our Jeep's lower gearing and low stall torque converter they will actually roll forward if in Drive with no accelerator pedal applied. So if you step on the brake you feel "pressure." Doesn't always happen with regular street cars due to their higher gear ratios and higher stall torque converters.

Thanks. I guess it is probably due to the lower end torque that I'm not used to. I don't have any other issues that you mentioned.

Running a 01 with an slush box, Phil hit it on the head with his explanation, also you might want to take a look at your rear brakes. your most likely running rear drums and they might need to be adjusted. Your only getting 70/30 front/rear braking from them.
The brakes on wranglers has always been a complaint point, there are several upgrades available from going to rear disc brakes to a full on hydro brake system change over. Stu at Stu's off-road has several write ups to consider if you don't like your current braking capabilities.
