Transmission rattle

98 Cherokee Sport owners, I need some help please.

My Sport (4.0 strait 6 automatic with 4WD) is making a rattling noise coming from the bell housing of the transmission.
The sound is like a metalic rattle, as if you were banging around a bunch of metal disc.

Now this sound only appears when I am ideling in nuteral. When I put it in drive all is quiet and the transmission runs
flawlessly through all the gears, no problems at all.

Should I be concerned? Do you think something is falling apart? it's just weird!

Have you checked all the skid plates and such? Is the rattle inside the housing or external? If something is loose it may just be a rattle.

I've seen this symptom for loose torque converter bolts or a cracked flexplate.

The noise is definitely inside the transmission

How were you able to determine this? What I suggested would sound like it's inside the transmission.

I will go lay under my jeep today and check out everything on the outside.

Well, if I get under the jeep I hear
internal noise. Will investigate again today to be sure. Thanks. D.
