transmission suggestions

I am looking to replace my t-150 3-speed with at least a four speed and a five speed if at all possible. I am looking to run a little better gear ratio to try and help to improve gas milage. Does anyone know what transmissions mate up to the 304 bellhousing and also work with a model 20 transfercase. It doesn't matter if the transmission is auto or manual but I would prefer a manual since that is what I am running anyway.

thanks

I also have the '76 CJ-5, that had the T-150 & model 20 T/C. I swapped it out for a T-176 4 sp. & Dana 300 T/C, from the same donor vehicle. All I needed was a new clutch, a pilot bushing, a shorter rear driveshaft, and the longer front driveshaft from the CJ-7 donor vehicle. Now it has a LOWER 1ST gear, and lower low range ratio. But I dont think this will improve your gas mileage at all, you still only havew a 1:1 ratio in fourth gear.

If you have a CJ-7 you can install a 5sp, (enough room) not sure about direct bolt up's though with it. If you require a real low first gear then think about the T-18 (6.4:1) or the SM435 both 4sp's. The SM435 has a first closley matching the T18's (the SM 420 has a 7:1 first!) There's a transmission simular to a T-18 called the T-90( I think)came in jeeps at one point in time.

Advanced Adapters will have all the information you could ever need on any kind of swapping you may wan't to do, engins, transmission, auto / manuals, whatever.

The T-18 is a has the ford pattern, the SM435 is a chebby. It'll require an adapter plate.

The T-18 should bolt right up. Find Advanced adapters on the net, (sorry I don't have the address right now.) Call them. They'll know for sure!
