Transmission swap choices....what fits?

So I am also thinking of dropping in a new transmission instead of the Chysler 3 speed, what else will fit?
I have heard that Chevy 4 speed autos, namely the 700R4 have the same bellhousing and will bolt right in, is this true?

also, could I expect any big problems arrising from a transmission swap, or am I better off just getting a new 3 speed chrysler?

thanks

ok, i just replied to the other topic... if you want to swap another engine, and want a better transmission, swap a carbed 350 with a 700r4 for the easiest results...

Fireman harry, do you wanna try to wire in a GM vortec computer??? The only way I would go Fuel infected (no I spelled that right) with a 350 swap is with a crate motor where the computer is self contained in a small box between the intake runners! Oh the pre vortec GM''s computers are even worse to wire!

All you need is a wiring schematic to wire it yourself. I'm going with a computer and harness from Howell Engineering for my pre-vortec 350 (about $400). 8)

Just an oppinion, but I´ve changed a whole bunch of 700R4´s out, junk. They were junk when they were introduced, they were junk when they were inproved, they were junk with the larger pumps and what not and were junk when they stopped making them in the early 90´s.
Around the mid 90´s, they made a replacement for the 700R, that ran for a few years, untill they changed to a computer controlled model, forget the number off hand. Par for the coarse, as soon as they get the bugs worked out, they change it again.
I´ve seen T350´s run hundreds of thousands of miles, in fairly large trucks. Manual shift/auto shift, they compression brake a little better than, normal T350´s, Cheap. T-400 probably a little better, but harder to come by and more expensive.
The 727 seems to hold together pretty good also. Many of the troubles can be traced back to the kick down cable, which also controls pump pressure somewhat. Requires a little attention.
If I had the money, I´ve spent on 700R´4 rebuilds, I could probably buy another late model Jeep with a good 727.
If your really curious, about the 700R4, find a couple of bad ones and have a look inside. Much of the internals, burnt black, clutch packs and other internals, noticiable smaller than T 350 parts.

question then, will it bolt up to a 4.0Liter I6, will adapters be needed? Have you ever thrown a T350 into a Wrangler?
Any help would be appreciated

thanks

The standard, Chrysler transmission, would be a better bet and all around not a bad transmission. For the I-6. Maybe I miss understood, thought the transmission was going in behind a Chev swap. Anything that doesn´t require, lengthening/shortening or replaceing the drive shafts, is probably the better choice. And has an available adaptor to the transfer and the right spline count.

When I get through with my daughters XJ, I´m gonna pick up another YJ cheap, pre 91 and install an early, pre 91 4.0 injected I-6 and find an adaptor somewhere for a chrysler bolt pattern 727, install a loadflight, three speed, non lock-up converter. With a manual shift (shift kit) and some serious compression braking. Doubt I´ll have to worry much about the transmission. Work on the diff´s if they break. 231 transfer, works good enough.
Never have put a Chevy in a Jeep, but put a whole bunch of Chevy´s in Chevy´s. 700R4 has a slightly lower first gear, seems to be prefered. But seems to me, that with V-8 torque and a low range in the transfer, why mess with a 700R4. For every guy I´ve heard say something good about the 700, I´ve heard a dozen looking for a replacement, a rebuild or an upgrade.

I am a new jeeper...have a quick question

Mudder Chuck, they never stop making the 700r4, just renamed them. They became the 6L4RE transmission (I think those are the right letters)

Its the 4l60-e I have that transmission in my s-10 blazer. It is a piece of crap.

i would certainly agree that the turbo series trannies are much better than the 700r4... and yeah... they still use them, just computerized rather than the full hydraulic version... same internals... but... i still think they would be quite fine in a wrangler, IF it was in good condition while put in

The 4l60e from the s10 series are crap. I have a 4l60e in my Z71 (160,000 miles). Its larger and heavy duty compared to the s10 series.
Computer and harness for a 93 LT1 is 900.00 from howell engineering. The whole setup is plug and play. Painless wiring is anything but painless. I'm in the process of having a 700r4 built. There are a lot of high performance/heavy duty parts now. Check out raptor transmissions.com
Advance adapters makes a spacer plate to to put the chrysler auto (999)behind a 350.
