When I changed the oil in the transmission on my 88 wrangler I seen some pretty good sized chucks (brass and steel)..
Question is has anyone out there rebuilt their on transmission??? How hard is it ??? I plan on taking it to Colorado this summer to do some 4x4 in the mountains.. Let me know.

Thanks
Dan

Ps... Suxs to be me hu ??? :-( :-x

Doesn't sound good-

I would assume that you are also having a litttle trouble shifting gears? The shavings of brass would be your syncronizers going.

Instead of rebuilding I would try and look around and find on that is used either someone upgrading or out of a wrecked on. Depending on what motor you have I would almost recommend changing out the transmission all together. If you have the 4.0 I would try and upgrade since the Jeep transmissions- AX-5 esp. are known to have problems.[addsig]

If you have a 5spd and 4.2L engine, the transmission is a Peugeot BA10/5. If you have a 5spd and 2.5L engine, transmission is the AX5. Either way, sounds like a rebuild or replacement is in your near future. Replacements can be had for $200 to $500 if you know where to look. Not too hard to change out, just time consuming.[addsig]

The hard parts about rebuilding and automatic are, having all the tools. Getting everything clean and finding a good step by step book that uses, regular language. I never have figured out what a sprang is, but it´s in there somewhere, says so in the book. :-D [addsig]

Just a thought, I´m not real familiar with the V-6 motor. But if I remeber correctly many came with the 904. If yours is a 904, I´d think about buying a used (junk yard) 999. I´ve seen many 999´s go for 160-200.000 miles. Not sure about the bell housing, the V-6 my require a little research. I´m fairly sure the lenght is the same, but assuming, has gotten me in trouble before. WWW.advanceadapters.com has some nice tables that might be helpfull.[addsig]
