Trying to get a 1998 Jeep Cherokee started

Hi all- This Cherokee has been sitting inside for a couple year, but it worked before it was parked. It turns over fine, but it won't start. After I crank it over and hit the gas petal for a while, I notice a strange sound -- even with the key turned off. it sounds exactly like when a block is cooling, but louder and more frequent (of course, the block is still cold). It seems to be coming from about the middle of the engine compartment. The sound slowly fades for a few minutes and then it goes away. I'm wondering if it might be the gas pump? But unclear why it would make that noise.

It could be a bad fuel pump but check for pressure first. Could also be the crank sensor so check for fuel pressure at the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and check for spark at the spark plugs

Is the noise under the hood or in the cabin? There is a valve for HVAC that is in the dash in many jeep models that clicks as it moves


As for starting. Gas air and spark. As noted start with gas pressure.
