Trying to install an alarm in my wrangler

So, after about 4 hours of wiring and :drunk: I'm about 80% done installing my viper 560xv alarm (I'm not installing the remote start stuff). The last part has me pretty stumped.

There are three options to connect the dome light to the alarm
a + wire
a - wire
a domelight supervision wire

The domelight supervision wire is labeled in the chart below (stolen from the12volt.com), but I can't seem to find it in my jeep. anyone know the location?

Currently, the + door wire is hooked up (I've tried both door pin wires), and opening the door doesn't set off the alarm.

Here are the wiring charts for my 2005 wrangler

thats because your door pins are neg trigger.

You should have a courtesy light on the bottom of the dash, use your meter to see if it is neg or pos trigger. here's how to tell the difference.

door closed, one wire gets nothing, the other gets 12+, open door, same wire still gets 12+ and the other shows ground, this is a neg trigger. use the Neg door wire from the alarm brain adn attach to that wire. that is a Neg trigger.

OR

If you get ground on one wire and nothing on the other when door is closed, and when open you still get ground on the same wire and 12+ on the other, that is Pos Trigger, send the + door wire from the brain to the 12+ wire off the courtesy lamp.

as for the remote start, it is a matter of hooking up a couple extra wires.

if it is a Viper, I am guessing it is a DEI starter..

off the relay pack (5 relays) you should have (all 12 ga wires)

2-red
1-pink
1-pink/white
1-purple
1-orange

coming down the steering column, you want to find the Ignition harness, it will have a bunch of 12 ga wires in it that will corespond to the colors you listed above.

here is how you should attatch

remote starter -- jeep Ignition Harness
Red -- Red (shows 12+ all time)
Red -- Red (shows 12+ all time)
Purple -- Pink/Orange (shows 12+ only when starter is cranking)
Pink -- Pink/LT green (shoews 12+ with 2 key clicks on)
Pink/White -- Pink/yellow (14 AWG) (they list it as a acc, but this is fine.
Orange -- Pink/yel(16AWG), pink/yel(12AWG) use two 12a Diodes to Isolate the two and split it off just the one orange wire. the white lines on the Diode need to be pointing towards the vehicle end of the connection.

The Tach Wire, tap into any one of the injectors with out the colors above, they will have the Tach Signal

and the brake wire is right at the brake switch just above the pedal.
If you have a black plastic surround for the key, start the car, hold in the little black button that comes with the Remote starter, wait for the LED to go solid, turn off the car and remote start like crazy. If you have a gray key, you will need a Bypass Modual. I believe it is DEI Part # 455J for your jeep, but check with a local shop first.

wow thanks Johnny!
I'm going to try and switch the door wires this weekend. I'm not using the remote start stuff - it just doesn't seem like a feature that I'd need. I did however buy the 508D dual zone prox. sensor. It seems pretty good so far. I've got it to chirp the alarm when you get to close. I haven't figured out how to wire up both the shock sensor, and the prox. sensor though.

One other question - I used scotch locks to make my connections to the ignition wires (remember - I'm not using the remote starter, and have only wired up 2 of the satellite wire pack, so no heavy current stuff). What do you think of them? I asked around as to what "the installers" use, but never got a good answer.

I am not a fan of any type of non-solder type of connection here Terry. From personal experience I recommend that you solder your wires in and use a liquid type of electrical tape then wrap after-wards. For inside the jeep I use the liquid electrical tape then a shrink wrap. I know the liquid stuff is messy and you have to wait 5-10 minuets for it to dry but it stops all oxidation from getting to your connection and in the case of water entering the jeep you know that those wires are safe.
I have seen too many clamp type of connectors come loose in the off-road environment and cause major damage on the trail or later.

scotch locks suck.. the best method short of soldering would be what I refer to as a T-Tap splice.

in the middle of a section of wire (where you scotch lock is) strip about a 1/4" of the sheathing back with wire strippers, use the pointed end on your multi meter or a pick tool and put a hole right through the copper where you just stripped. take the wire you are trying to attach to the circut and strip about a 1/4" from the end and put that through the hole you just made, close the hole and wrap the attached wire around the body of the wire you are tapping into. then use 3M (nothing better) electrical tape, tape it up. for extra securite, buy some small zip ties and put a zip tie one each side of the T-tap so that it is on the tape, essentially holding the tape on. it will let go over time.

awesome explaination. I just went and got some good strippers and soldering iron from radio shack (they were out of liquid tape). I plan on doing the t-tap as you described, then putting some solder over it to hold it in place.

Why not remote start? I personally would rather have that than the alarm. Warm the Jeep up in the winter and cool it in the summer---talking about climate control, not engine.

I thought I was told once that you didnt want to start the car with the A/C/ on...or was that off???????

I live in VA Beach - avg winter temp is 50s, and average summer temps are in the 80s. If I had alot of snow to deal with that would be another story.

I think my biggest problem with it is the idea of leaving my car running without keeping an eye on it. That just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. I can wire it up later if I choose, but I don't think I'd ever use it.

Oh yeah - I soldered everything up, and it works great! The door switches are negative trigger. I can now leave the top off, and if anyone gets really close, or in my jeep, the proximity sensor will catch them

sort of... a good thief will know that if they crawl under neither the jeep and cut the ground cable off the frame, your alarm will be useless....

might want to think about adding a battery back up if thef and crime is a issue where you are. I live 15 minutes from Lawrence massachusetts, the stolen car capital of America. so I know you pain.

Ah, i'm not worried about that. I don't think that a siren going off would really stop anyone that wanted to steal my car, I'm just looking to deter the casual thief. I've even stopped locking my full doors, because most people would just break the glass, or cut my softtop, both of which would be worse than losing the change in my console.
