Using a/c for an aircompressor?

I would just like to know how difficult it is to convert an a/c pump into an aircompressor. What's involved? What kind is the best to use? Will it supply enough constant air for air tools or do I need a tank and where do I get one? How do I find a serpentine belt that will fit with the a/c pump installed? I know absolutely nothing about doing this so any input would be helpful. Thanks.[addsig]

it IS a great conversion, it DOES supply enough to run air tools, its quite involved, but not hard. the parts should cost about $100 give or take a few, that's other than the pump and belt. My mama stopped lactating many many years ago. But overall... the conversion is much worth the time, money, and effort[addsig]

Yes they can be used for air compressors. I installed one on my jeep 19yrs ago, and its still going strong! A tank will be necessary if you want to run air tools, but if you just need to inflate tires, the compressor will do that with out a tank. Tanks can be ordered on-line, or you can find them at big truck dismantlers. I got my airtank at a truck dismantler here locally. It only ran me $25 (2.5 gal size)
The on-board (A/C style) air compressor work very well. The one on my jeep ( from an 87' renault alliance) ran me $50 at a junk yard, and it can sand blast better that my home Craftsmans 3hp home compressor!

i used a stock one out of a cherokee... mounts to the factory mounts on my yj.... works well.. i can use a 1/2 inch impact, fill tires, reset beads... all sorts of stuff.. just be sure to keep it oiled with air tool oil... i also have a 3 gallon tank and a t-handle on the throttle to set it up to two grand...
