What transmission for a 86 cj7?

Hey every body I could use some advice. I think Im going to put in a new trans in my 1986 Jeep cj7 i6. Currantly I have a 3 speed auto, I m thinking going with a manual not sure what to get. overdrive would be nice really dont care to spend a mint or do a bunch of mods.hopefully i could get some thing used or at a junk yard. so what should I get? thanx

$150-$300 usually. Find one with the fluid still in it, drain and make sure there isn't any glitter in the fluid. Brass glitter is what used to be the syncrhonizers. No glitter, put in Redline MT90 fluid and it'll last a long time.

A T-176 is a good transmission that shouldn't be hard to hook up. They came original on CJ-7s, if I recall correctly. They don't quite qualify as heavy duty, but they're pretty decent medium duty trannies, as memory serves. See link: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t176.htm. Note that the T-176 doesn't have an overdrive. My personal preference is a T-18, but they can be expensive, and might be overkill, depending upon your application.

Your definitely one of very few swapping an auto for a manual. The Autos found in the CJ were actually pretty decent. I would say that if you are serious about it, you could probably post an ad in the various Jeep classifieds around the internet. You should be able to make a decent trade since alot of folks are going auto. Don't forget to trade your pedal assembly too.
